Enter your teams, courts, and format to see how many matches you'll play, how many each team is sure to get, and how long the day runs. It uses the same estimate RNKD runs when an organizer sets up an event.
Fits in the hours you have, with time to spare. You have 4 hours.
8 teams, pool play, then a bracket (top 4 make the bracket), on 4 courts: 5 rounds and 5 back-to-back match slots of 30 minutes on the busiest court.
| Phase | Matches | Rounds | Slots | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pool play | 12 | 3 | 3 | 1 hour 30 min |
| Bracket | 3 | 2 | 2 | 1 hour |
We split the event into rounds the way a tournament desk calls them: every match in a round can start once the round before it is finished. For each round, the number of waves is the round's matches divided by your courts, rounded up. Add up the waves for every round in every phase, then multiply by the length of one match plus 5 minutes to change teams.
Pools play side by side, so a round of pool play covers every pool at once. Byes take no time, so a round made only of byes isn't counted. Double elimination interleaves the winners and losers brackets and ends with one grand final, with no reset match.
The estimate assumes every round is called as soon as the last one ends, and it leaves no room for late teams, forfeits, or a final that goes long. On our first event, players arriving late pushed the first serve back about 20 minutes. Build that in yourself.
With one game per match (25 minutes plus 5 to change teams) on 4 courts: 8 teams in 2 pools of 4, then a bracket of the top 4, take about 2 hours 30 min. 16 teams in single elimination take about 2 hours 30 min, and 16 teams in 4 Swiss rounds into a top 8 bracket take about 5 hours 30 min. Make every match best of 3 and the 8-team pool event grows to about 5 hours 25 min.
Every team plays every other team once, so with N teams each one plays N − 1 matches and the event has N × (N − 1) ÷ 2 in total. 6 teams play 15, 8 teams play 28, 10 teams play 45. That grows fast, which is why big fields split into pools.
A team is out after its second loss, so N teams play 2 × (N − 1) matches when the grand final is a single match, and one more when the final can be reset. 8 teams play 14 and 16 teams play 30. Every team plays at least 2.
One fewer than the number of teams: every match sends one team home, and all but the champion go home. 16 teams play 15, and the 8 that lose in round 1 play only once.
